Might I Inquire

Inquiring of the Lord! What a novel idea. Seriously though, inquiring of the Lord should be so second nature that those who observe our behavior should be asking “Why are you always talking to yourself?”

Twice in Isaiah the Lord encourages us to “Come, let us reason together…,” and again “Present your case says the Lord… submit your arguments…”(Isaiah 1:18, 41:21). David was forever inquiring of the Lord. Not only was it important for himself personally but it was an important strategy for Israel. When we inquire of the Lord through appropriate means we stand on solid ground, David’s life being a great example.

Saul on the other hand, is an example of the inappropriate behavior of a representative of God. In a fit of desperation, lacking humility and trust, he sought the counsel of mediums, tapped into the spiritual world and eventually was put to death by the God (1 Chronicles 10:13-14) (Proverbs 14:12).

There is only one way to inquire of the Lord and that is simply to ask, but don’t take the Lords silence for unanswered prayer as Saul did when he tried to discern God’s will. There are three ways to discerning the will of God for us today, His Word, prayer and the indwelling Holy Spirit. Never stop inquiring of the Lord and always use these three avenues of discernment (Proverbs 3:5-6).
